Artist Statement

Adding a little color where there’s silence and giving voice to the parts of my self that might normally remain more contained interests me. I have found that painting and sculpting in mixed media through a process of layering over time enables me to explore this mode of self-expression and honestly, I like the way it feels. I work as an artist in a variety forms: writing, dancing, painting, sculpting, storytelling, and music. About two years ago, they began to merge and take on a new life.

Layering is an integral part of my process. I use just about anything that I can get to adhere to a canvas – handmade paper, coffee grinds, eggshells, tea bags, twine, etc. I use both oil and acrylic based paints and polymers to achieve this, and during the drying time, I think about the layers and live my life in order to build the next one.

I’m well-acquainted with God’s grace and feel pretty grateful that my life is as funny as it seems sometimes. I think that if my work is to simply remind myself of that fact, then I’m pretty successful. If I help others, I am extremely successful.
